Undine, from the latin word unda, meaning wave or water, is a mythological creature, a water nymph who becomes human when they fall in love but heartbreakingly is doomed to die if their lover is unfaithful. I stumbled upon the sculpture by Ives (shown above) years ago, and as a hopeless romantic drawn to the sea, I have never forgotten the story.

I feel a deep connection to this beautiful creature, at home in water, expressing such vulnerability, softness, and strength as she takes a chance on love, and enters the world. When I create clothing my hope is for the wearer to feel elegant and at home as the garments drape and dance around the body, comforting and familiar, like water.

These photos were made in collaboration with my dear friend Caroline Goddard of Tend as we explore our connection to Undine. This summer we will be having a Pop-Up Shop at Worlds Fair Gallery in Providence RI. A collection of artwork, knitwear, and objects for your home, all with Undine in mind. Join us on June 26 for the opening with cocktails by Little Bitte Cocktails.
